I’m a huge fan of telling people, “Don’t tell me what to do,” when they try to get me to do something. I laugh, then I graciously do what they ask. I even do it to my mom. There’s a difference between just “following the rules” and doing something and “serving God.” The sinful woman may not have always followed the rules, but she loved God. The Pharisees followed the rules, but they didn’t truly love God. This is the difference between saying the Church “has a lot of rules” and recognizing that following the teachings of Christ is an expression of love.
I love my wife. I don’t look at porn or hit on other women because God is telling me what to do (or rather, what not do). I don’t do that because I love my wife. I respect her. I want what’s best for her. Similarly, I try my hardest to avoid sin because I love God.
