We‘re terrible at self-examination. Ever been on a sports team and lost the big game? Somehow, even though you win as a team or lose as a team, you went home feeling like it was your fault? How have you ever gotten an A on a group project for school and convinced yourself that you were the only reason you got that grade? The same can also be true for our faith.
We can look at our lives and think, “Hey, I’m not that bad… at least I’m not like THAT guy.” Or maybe you just think you’ve got the whole thing figured out. If we’re truly in tune with our spiritual growth and development, we’d know that we never have it figured out. Believing so makes us vulnerable. We need to find some middle ground where we’re not too harsh on ourselves, but not too easy either—understanding that there is always room for improvement.
